[RC] Chickens and fly control - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

We have a few chickens (currently 4) - can't say they make
much of a dent in the fly population, but they do give us
lots of eggs. Ours are completely free range - we've lost
some to coyotes and foxes, but this last batch is 3 or 4
years old now. We buy them as chicks and keep them in a
rabbit hutch until they are all feathered out and fairly
grown up. It is good to get lighter chickens that can fly
a bit - ours roost in the rafters or on the stall walls so
they are fairly safe. They also get along with our barn cats
just fine. We live in MN where it is very cold in the winter
- they haven't required a heated area but I do give them a
little bit of layer ration but it's probably not necessary
as they eat hay seeds and whatnot too. I probably buy 2 50 lb
bags of layer ration a year - so about $15 for 4 chickens.
They usually do stop laying in the winter as we don't have
them under lights. All in all, they are very low maintenance
although you will have to deal with a fair amount of chicken
poop, especially if you have a large free-range flock.
