Re: [RC] [RC] molasses content of feeds - Timothy Worden

Karen,

That's cool to hear about Don and Geo. A couple
months ago we put our 4 horses on straight oats as
their main feed....besides 24/7 pasture. I resisted
for the longest time from switching off sweet feed to
whole oats. One horse in particular, my Quarab Poco,
kept blowing absesses and always acted crazy. Once we
switched to oats and non-molasses beet pulp, his
attitude took a 180. Not to mention our horses feet
are the best they've ever been. We believe taking a
majority of the sugar content from the molasses out of
the diet made the difference. Along with the whole
oats and non-molasses beet pulp, our two main
competition horses also get about 1/2lb scoop of
Empower a day. That Empower sure makes their coats
shiny and their weight is holding great, if not
gaining. Poco's weight held very well after a tough
50 at Leatherwood a few weeks ago. During the event
he had the choice of soaked oats, soaked beet pulp, or
hay....he mostly ate the plain ol' soaked oats.

Tim

I call that the Don
Funk Method. I figure if Geronimo can make 10,000
miles eating hay and
plain old oats, then it can't be too awful bad for
my own horses.
