There are a couple of pics of the boots on a horse where you can see the back.

They have to be used over shoes because the backs of the shoes slide
into the backs of the boots to help hold the boots on. If you put them
on without shoes, they won't stay on at all. Well, that's my guess. I
never did try them barefoot.
