RE: [RC] Old Selam and sick horses - Ranelle Rubin

I had a horse get severe diarrhea once from moldy hay. He tested
negative for everything (including Salmonella) and it was discovered
that the barn where I was boarding had been using up some hay that had
been stored through the winter (we were in a summer only board at the
time in the high country) It was strange because within a week, there
were 3 other horses (out of about 50) in different areas in the barn
that also had to be treated. When I spoke with their owners, all of them
had horses that were not picky eaters and habitually "devoured" anything
given them. The picky eaters left clumps of moldy hay in their feeders.
4 days of IV fluids (and a $900. vet bill) later my horse was fine..

I never knew horses got salmonella. How do they get it?

Yes, horses can and do get salmonella, but it sure doesn't sound like
what is going on with the Old Selam group. Salmonella causes severe
cramping and diarrhea, and is very difficult to get under control. It
is also highly contagious--when it hits a hospital ward at a veterinary
school or a large equine hospital, often the whole area has to be shut
down and decontaminated.

I had the unhappy experience of being a senior vet student during a
salmonella outbreak at Washington State. The entire surgical barn was
closed to surgical patients and became a salmonella wing for the
duration, and we had to use boot dips and all sorts of sanitary methods
when entering and leaving the barn. We used to say that the diarrhea
was so bad that the horses could "thread a needle at 20 paces" and it
often took several days of intensive IV fluid therapy to get these
horses turned around.

It is a NASTY disease in horses, and one that I hope no one here ever
has to deal with.
