[RC] Botanically speaking garlic not onions in the SE region - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

The onions that Angie was referring to in the SouthEast are really garlic.
That is what our Limestone County Co-Op said, and the vet also.

Those things will make the gums and any white skin turn pink.

Those garlic are bad news for the liver function of the horse.

GARLIC is in the Southeast, not onion. I know everybody refers
to them as onions, but botanically they are garlic.

My horses come winter time and when the garlic gets to really growing,
will smell of sausage <grin> when they ummm . . when they umm how do I say,
"pass gas". I promise! Pee you! They gums will get pink too.

I haven't had any colic from the garlic. IMO bermuda hay is
a no no hay. Too much risk when they eat it for impaction. I
have also seen them choke on the hay, due to it's fineness of stem.

There is no way to control the garlic in the pastures. I see cotton fields
that are regularly
chemically treated with ALL kinds of weed stuff, and each and every year
the garlic comes back. They turn the soil each year. Only way to
rid the pasture is to hand pick each tiny bulb. Gosh, sometimes, when I mow
the pastures come fall, the smell of cut onion/garlic is over
powering. Makes me sick to breath it after awhile.

I have never believed garlic was good for a horse. Not after seeing the pink
gums, pink noses of my white nosed arab, gas letting moments, and the nubmer it
can do to the liver.

North Alabama where the flies cover my horses face like a blanket. Yes, I
masks and fly spray on dim boyz. Guess the
garlic isn't keeping the bugs away. And they sure smell of sausage right now.
