I have a mare that colics at the drop of any change in weather.  She coliced
so often that she began to walk herself with her head held low.  This was an
early sign.  Only once did I not catch it right away.  My vet told me that
pellets are easier on the digestive system, I don't know if this is true or
not but after I took her off of a sweet feed mixture and put her on pellets
she has only coliced once in the past 2 years.  I have no idea if this has
anything to do with it.

Another trick I use which works with my horses is a huge barrel filled
with water....a saucepan of bran floating on the top and again, a good
dose of salt.  They really slurp that down all day......then the salt

kicks

in and they go drink a lot of clear water.....
