How about just pulling over and letting traffic pass?  We do this when
and if a line builds up behind us.  Here in Washington it is illegal to
let five cars pile up behind you and there are slow vehicle turnouts.

That's true in some places here as well, but the highway where Ed and I
both encountered the "implements of husbandry" a couple of weekends ago
doesn't have turnouts and doesn't have a terribly wide shoulder. 
Additionally, the "implements" in question were wide enough that they
overlapped both the fog line AND the center stripe.  I was seriously
wondering why they didn't have "WIDE LOAD" signs and a pilot car,
myself...
