[RC] Feeding Colt - k s swigart

Bob said:

Today I bought a six month old colt.
I would appreciate feeding recommendations to help
maximize his growth and health.

Well, generally speaking the way to feed to maximize his health would be
to not try to maximize his growth. One of the biggest long-term health
problems facing young horses is growing too big too fast.

Probably all he might need in addition to a good grass hay forage (and
timothy is a pretty good grass hay) would be a vitamin/mineral
supplement especially formulated for young horses, but you may want to
have an analysis done of the hay (depending on where it was grown, its
mineral content can vary) to find out just what micronutrient gaps might
need to be filled in.
