Re: [RC] Horse intro to elec. fencing? - heidi

I am looking for tips/advice on how or whether to introduce horses put
in a new pasture to its electric fencing.

Should I let them bump it and fly away? risking flight/panic injuries?

Or make them bump it but have violated their trust?

Or warn them away and let them take the consequences? OR what??? Yikes.

Tips welcome!

First off, I'd only use electric fence in areas where they DO have room to
jump away from it without getting hurt on something else.

That said, go with Option #1. Mark the fence well (either the fence
itself is the visible tape sort, or if it is wire, tie flagging along it
at frequent intervals so that it is visible) so that they can see it
easily. Then let THEM find it of their own accord, and learn the lesson.

If you make them bump it, you ARE violating their trust--it becomes you
doing it to them, instead of the fence. And that isn't the lesson you
want them to learn. If you warn them away, you will have to be out there
24/7 doing so, which sort of defeats the purpose...

DO hang out and see what happens when they touch it the first time, just
in case, but my experience is much like Ed's--the VAST majority of horses
figure it out without too much hassle.

Heidi
