[RC] Newbie question re rider fitness - Nancy Sturm

Okay folks, I need some informed information about fitness (perhaps
cross-training) for distance riding.

I rode dressage, hunters and lots of trail until age 50 when my husband
and I adopted two kids with cerebral palsy and became foster parents to two
more. Instant very busy life at our place. I continued to run for a year
or two, rode in a few bike races and then became an exercise dropout.

Two years ago, at age 60, husband retired and I had time to ride again. My
new horse and I just completed our second slow LD. He is definitely good to
go - the vet commented that his scores were the same vetting in, at 14 miles
and at 25. If they'd scored me, however, they'd have probably trailered me
out.

Any suggestions for exercise I can do to strengthen my quads and just
generally increase my own endurance? Riding all day every day comes to
mind, but it's just not going to happen.

Nancy Sturm
