RE: FW: [RC] rearing - Mike Sherrell

I bet you're right. Susan Black just suggested using a raw egg -- said the
horse takes the dribbling yolk for blood. I'd beat myself up for years if I
did permanent damage to a horse.

Subject: Re: FW: [RC] rearing

I had a very experienced trainer recommend being ready for the rear
and
smacking the horse on the poll when it starts up -- use something
like a
crop, I guess.

I do not recommend hitting a horse between the ears with a crop. It is
VERY easy for the tip to go down and hit the horse's left eye (if you're
right handed). I took a barrel racer friend trail riding once and her
horse pranced and acted the fool the whole time. She got mad and hit him
between the ears with the crop. Soon after we noticed him keeping his
left eye shut and she blamed "these darned tree limbs". I told her she
had done it but she didn't admit it.

I also did a stupid thing when young and foolish. Had a horse throw his
head back and almost hit my nose and I was already fed up with him. I had
the end of my split nylon reins in my right hand and I whacked him
between the ears with them. He *instantly* flipped over backwards and we
tumbled down the side of a mountain (Tennessee Mtn...so for you Tevis
free fallers picture lots of leaves, soft loamy ground, and trees to
stop us). When he jumped up he stood there with his left eye stuck shut.
I felt HORRIBLE. Turned out the end of that rein tore his cornea. It
healed with a cloudy spot on it. If you're *determined* to whack a horse
between the ears I've heard a woofle ball bat is best, but I don't think
it does anything except release a little stress for the rider.
