Re: [RC] [RC] Height of horses - Bette Lamore

This may seem surprising, because we are known for breeding tall horses (as we stood a 16.2-- yes REALLY!-- stallion who was VERY typey with a deep girth), yet my favorite trail horse was only 14.2. I used to ride Mark's 16 h gelding until I started riding with an ex-Tevis dévote who seemed suicidal and took me up and down cliffs. I sure felt a lot safer closer to the ground!
Of course, Summy's gone and now my favorite guy is 15.1, but actually I'm doing more beach than cliffs these days (softer on the derrière) so it is not critical.
Mark insists on at least 15.3 as he is 6'5" with VERY long legs and thinks he looks like Juan Valdez on the Folger's coffee donkey on anything less ;-)
Vive la différence! That's why Baskins-Robbins had 29 flavors!
Bette and Bunny (measuring in at 15.2 and growing!)

Also, what about the preferences of the riders? Very few riders have posted that they actually *prefer* shorter horses...most want something

ME! I consider 14.1 or 14.2 to be perfect; 15 is too tall.

I agree 100% :) My 4 yr old is currently 14.1h, and should top out at around 14.2h - perfect! I'm 5'4 1/2 (don't forget that 1/2" LOL) with a bad knee, and anything over 15h is hard for me to get on. My current horse is 15.2h...I need a mounting block to get on, and don't dare dismount on the trail unless there's a log nearby or a ditch to put him in. The dang stirrup is at my belly button when I'm standing next to him! I love him to death, but I *would* like to cut him off at the knees! As someone else mentioned, having the depth and width of body is important too...my youngster has nice well-sprung ribs and a deep heart girth. He might be short by some peoples standards, but he's got plenty of substance. He goes to the trainer next month to be started under saddle...can't wait to get him out on the trails!

Dawn in East Texas (and Epic Sundance - who's packing a little *too* much substance right now - easy keeper!)
