other horse sports seem to manage it - try just showing up at an event or 
dressage show or large hunter/jumper show with no pre-entry :)

I know, I know, we're not showing, we don't have all those rules, we don't 
want to wear fancy clothes, blah, blah, blah, save your breath :-)

I'm not advocating we become more show-like, just stating that endurance 
is the only horse sport I've ever been involved in where you can just show 
up with no pre-entry.

Is that just "the way it's always been done"?
