[RC] Response to: Hoof Problem?? or Normal?? - Amy Anglin

In my experience - that white powdery flaky stuff you see on your horses hooves is normal.
This is something that I see from time to time - and it usually does happen around weather changes... A woman at our barn in New Mexico asked me about this 6 weeks ago when the weather changed to monsoon season and her mares hooves came up the same way for about a week.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, nor would I pick at it - it usually clears up pretty quickly and the hooves look perfect again soon.

But I am curious about what it is, too. Are there any vets out there who want to give an informed opinion on what the white powdery hoof exudate-like stuff is?

Thanks,

A.
