Re: [RC] [RC] Pigeon Fever What is it? - Lynn Kinsky

Just curious, what exactly is pigeon fever and is there any way to prevent it? Sounds very painful and very gross!

Chris & JJ(who doesn't want to get it at all :))

Pigeon fever is also called dryland distemper (http://www.bloodhorse.com/viewstory_plain.asp?id=12800). It's endemic to coastal California (in fact, my vet is predicting a bad year this year since he is already treating several cases and generally it doesan't show up until the Fall). About all you can do is keep good sanitation, keep the fly population down and keep your horses otherwise healthy. In 20 years of having 5-10 horses on my five acres I have had six cases -- two of those a mare that got it two different years.
