Re: [RC] [RC] buying, selling, breeding, producing - Laurie Durgin

A very wise woman once told me a horse is worth what the owner is willing to sell him/her at and what a buyer is willing to pay.

Amen. My daughter moved from the backyard horse into the hunter-jumper world. One of our trainers bought a 900$ Qh with decent breeding from a guy who didn't have a clue. Backyard horse. She resold the horse after 30 days of riding and a bit of jumping for 6,000$ (and it bucked). She would get horses at auction and use them a bit, then resell for 6 or 7 times what she got them for. Just cause she was a "trainer". Two other barns I know were even less scrupulous. Horses in hunters and Jumpers are worth what the trainers say they are.....
In the area my daughter is in, the clients , pay what they are told the horse is worth. I know a pony that started 5 years ago on the dinky saddle club shows, did some 4 h. Some B shows---Went sour from overjumping, they picked her up, did some reschooling and are using her. She was 1,000$ pony, then a 3500$ pony, then a 6,000$ pony, then a 1,800$ pony, I think they may sell her for 15,000 this time. They have a warmblood Stallion who was worth about 30,000$ when he got here, They took him to a few halter classes. He was like the only one of three on the circut, and won some in hand classes. Now he is valued (1 year later ) at 400,000$
Seen alot of 2500$ horses sold for 15,000-30,000$ to the "right person". We had a mare stay here, she was hurt and needed daily care, She was bought for 5,000 at a 3. My daughter taught her to jump for the trainer as a student. She sold her for 8,500$ after injury healed. A year later she sold for 15,000$ Then a year later she was on the Florida winter circut and for sale for 30,000$
It really seems to be in 'who you know', your connections, if you have a 'name barn'.

Seems to me, the value in that arena is, how it effects your ego......
