Re: [RC] Flat croup ?s - Bette Lamore

"Croup" is not synonymous with "hip" --- you can have a flat croup at a stand when one stands up the horse with one back leg slightly behind where the other one is and not bunched up in the front end. This is how all the halter horses are shown. If one were to look at these horses closely or at a walk or stood up differently, one would see a very nicely angled hip in MANY cases (not all halter horses are complete cripples!-- look at the performance record of *Bask, Huckelberry Bey, the racing records of many of the imported halter horses-eg. *Muscat to name a few). And yes it is true that halter horse people build up the muscles of the hind end (using round pen exercising or frequently tread mills) thus giving a more flattened look in the croup. Perhaps Nancy was referring to the need to build up these muscles for a better gate. Just a thought!

This came up before when breeders and trainers were discussing the conformation and "no flat croups" issue. However, in Nancy Loving's book, Conformation and Performance, she mentions the flat croup enabling the "long flowing stride" to "cover ground well at the trot because they can easily push back with their hind legs". As the best job for this horse, distance trail riding is recommended.
Needing to further understand the issues here, I'm hoping someone will continue my education! Comments/explanations more than welcome!! Thanks! nikki
