Re: [RC] old remedies - rides2far

In the back of the book are "recipes" for illnesses and injuries.

I've got a vet book from 1860's. It suggests to feed the horse ground up
glass to kill bots! It also has a cure for cancer, and a recipe to gentle
horses (involves grinding up the chestnut on the leg and mixing with rose
oil to rub on your hands or something like that)

On the other hand, Linda Tellington Jones once published a book where she
related some old Gypsy remedies. They said that if a horse had say...a
big stick stabbed into him the best thing to do was leave it. In a matter
of days it's coated with pus and slides out with no damage...whereas if
you pulled it out splinters & stuff stayed behind and caused all sorts of
problems. I thought, "Yeah right". Then a few years ago my ex-endurance
horse that a neighbor owned stuck a HUGE 4" or so nail in the back of his
frog. It was just sticking out about 1/2" when she came to get me. I
couldn't believe it when I saw it. It had apparently been in there a
while and when I just touched the end it slid right out, well lubricated
with pus. That horse healed up almost immediately with absolutely no
penecillan or anything. After that I thought, O.K. maybe... but doubt I
could stand to leave anything like that on purpose.

One more thing about bacon grease. My grandmother always wanted me to
paint my pony's feet with it. Dangerous licking for the dogs...but what's
worse is fire ants LOVE it. Don't put it on them please!
