RE: [RC] Western States 50 Accident - Mary Abbott

I see... So the AERC only exists for people... Well, that might be true.
Horses don't have their own organizations! However, I thought the AERC
represented people who cared about horses and might want to set up a few
rules to protect them while we are all out on the "playing field," maybe
going a bit overboard while involved in competition. You know, there may be
no one at fault here re: the WS 50 accident. A seasoned horse may have
simply stepped off the trail. Who knows? I don't know the person or horse
involved. I wasn't there. But there have been a lot of posts here about
training for this or that, as if the horse wasn't trained and its rider was
a novice. (And if that's the case, maybe that is the issue that needs to be
looked at. After all, even NASCAR and open-wheeled racing have established
participation criteria.) When the AERC investigates and puts out all the
facts, we will know and learn. That's all I ask. I am sure the appropriate
committee will look into it, and their conclusions will be made public. Who
doesn't support that?

Then why do we have the AERC? What is it's purpose? Just to tabulate
points? Do our horses just say "Hey, let's meet at Devil's Thumb, run
along
cliffs, cross a river and race 50 miles to Auburn tomorrow?"!! Who sets the
stage for these events? That organization needs to take some
responsibility
for that set up. Otherwise, why doe

We have AERC to provide the rules for an even playing field, so that we all
are competing in the same way, we're all playing the same game. AERC
defines what an endurance ride is and how we will compete. It is up to
each of us to learn those rules, ride under those rules, and within those
rules, to take care of ourselves and our own horses.
