I'd like to say some 4 letter words here in response to the above owner's comments, but since this is a family message board I will simply say... Laurie, you were *absolutely right* to trust your gut instincts and take that horse back.  Not one hair on your head is worth some stupid animal hurting you. 
 
In NO WAY did YOU fail -- the failure was all on the owner  for handing you a useless animal and expecting you to "school" it for her while you were supposed to help remove ribbons.  Good for you that you put your own safety above all else -- at least you have ensured you will be around to help volunteer for future rides.  :-)
