I just did a quick browse on tying up on the web.  Found some
interesting things.  

One site (http://www.showhorsepromotions.com/tyingup.htm) stated
that Azoturia is not one disease with one cause, but can have
many causes, which can vary by breed.  

Another noted that mares in heat are more likely to tie up,
suiggesting a hormonasl component.
