Re: [RC] Man v. Horse speeds - Ed & Wendy Hauser

"...Additionally, in the Prescott Man against Horse endurance ride held
pretty much every year, it is my understanding that it has a tendency to
be a "toss up" as to whether it is one by a runner or a horse. However,
this ride also has mandatory holds for the horses that it doesn't have
for the runners, as did the 50 mile race between Tom and Jenn Nice on Al
in Dubai (which Tom won after the second mandatory hold for Al was
reduced from 40 minutes to 20 minutes)...."

After I posted I looked up the UK website on this race. In 2003 and 2002
there were about 4 riders each year with times between 2:02 and 2:05 and the
fastest people were in the 2:12 area. I did find the entry blank, but I was
not able to find a listing of the horse rules, so I don't know what holds
and/or vet checks are required.

I can not remember reference, but I heard many years ago that the record
speeds are faster for humans at 50 miles and above. Again even if I could
find the reference, it would probably not be good enough that one could
actually find out what was done.

Much depends upon the rules of the race. Modern endurance rules protect
horses and thus slow them down. 100 or more years ago horses were often run
until they died and nobody thought much about it.
