It never was.  Giardia was well known to the mountain men as "Beaver Fever".  150 years ago people just expected to get digestive upsets at frequent intervals.  If you don't know about the germ theory of disease, you just figure it is bad luck or divine wrath or whatever.
 
Frequent digestive upsets and the "cure" have just allowed the documentation of the exact location of Traveler's Rest from the Lewis and Clark expedition.
 
(Yes I am aware that L &C had lots of nutrition problems relating to their Atkins friendly diet and no vitamins_
