Re: [RC] Recipe for doing a 100 - Karla Watson

We have a Paso Fino here that is doing 50s this season. He is on our endurance team. Just finished 3--50s so far this season since end of March in good shape. He will be doing 50s this whole season. Tough little horse and quite determined!

Yippeeee .. another Paso Fino!   I also ride a Paso Fino and we just had our
first completion (his and mine)  at the No Frills 30-mile ride in the rain,
sleet and snow.  If that's not enduring, I sure don't know what is!!  I was
so hyyped up after the ride that I entered the 50 at Old Dominion.  Now I'm
sitting here wondering "what the heck was I thinking"???  Oh well, its done
and we're going to give it a shot.  At the very least I'll come home with
some fancy new tack

As for doing 100 miles -- I don't know.  I'm not the best trail follower and
have little sense of direction so I'm very wary of being out on the trail
after dark, unless of course, they install street lights and flashing arrows
pointing the way.

I have thought about hundred mile rides.  Right now I'm not sure I am going
to be able to survive the 50 mile ride that I'm training for.  And I ride a
Paso Fino.  I was told when I started this sport that Paso's couldn't do
endurance.  I laughed and said sure they can, you just have to be more
careful with them...  So we did two LD's.  The first one Alpine was fit and
came in bouncing.  I came in limping (the vet told me it was a good thing he
didn't have to judge my gait!).  The second one was the first year of the
Jennings Boogie, and I took my unfit horse out just to support the ride.  He
finished bucking!  I finished slightly better off than the first one.  After
that, I knew he'd do a 50 mile ride.

So we are planning on doing the River Run and the Jennings 50 mile rides,
and we'll see what happens.  I don't know if I'm cut out for 100 miles, and
I'd worry about my little paso...if he's capapble of holding up to a 100.
Eventually, maybe, I'll do one, but one step at a time.

I still prefer what it is that BH100, Tevis, The Duck's Soup of Endurance,
etc. has to offer...but, to see a horse canter over sand for those
distances...Good Lord, it humbles me.
