We get our word "mile" from the Latin "mille" that stood for 1000 paces.  The soldiers counted paces on the march, also the Romans built roads for their troops with carefully surveyed mile posts every 1000 paces.  So I think we can safely conclude that the distances mentioned are as accurate as a good endurance ride.
