[RC] inspiring new crew.. - Steve Shaw

If you want to give a new crew person the best experience, especially if they have some smarts, give them just the basics. Then encourage them to talk to people about their best thoughts. Get them involved.
Then suggest that they study the trail and strategize where they can get to places others won't go and what to give there. Extra water, wet hay, splashes, refills of water bottles, fixing tack problems... (helping whomever is along too!)
One of the best ways to encourage a smart new crew that want more is to entice them to do the unusual or tough!

Common sense should also be a part of the decision making process. If you
see someone who doesn't have any, hand them your tool box.
