[RC] re: too wide or two narrow - A. Perez

Re: saddle causing swelling under the cantle- could be too wide,
too narrow... or neither. The real problem is that for whatever
reason, the saddle is putting your weight too far back. A saddle
that is way two narrow can cause ths, since the front of the
saddle will be high (propped up high above te withers), tipping
the entire saddle back. But, if the saddle is so wide it sits
down on the horses spin, that too could cause problems (though
usually it shows up in the withers).

Viewed from the side, the seat of the saddle should appear
level, with the pomel and cantle at roughly the same height. If
the pommel is high, then the saddle is tipping you back. A
wedge pad might help.

Of course, it is possible to sit too far back in a
properly-fitting saddle, especially if you ride with too-short
stirrups or if the saddle does not fit YOU properly. You should
be able to fit the width of your hand both in front of you and
behind you on the saddle. I'd suspect this rather than width
issues, but it's hard to say withoug seeing the saddle on the
horse.
