I work at a small animal vet clinic, and before we euthanize any animal, we give them a shot of tranquilizer.  Our vet always does that for our horses when we have to put one of our Arabs down.  I think it helps the animals feel more relaxed, and I will always do that to any animals that I have to ever put down.
