RE: [RC] [RC] Hair loss and Oil Reactions - Snodgrass, Bonnie

Just a caution here. Some horses are VERY reactive to oil. so
spraying/wiping them with an oil-based fly spray can make them itch like
crazy. Been there! I tried MTG on someones advice on one of my horse's tail
last summer. She does lot's of tail rubbing but she is just plain itchy year
round. One of those itchy Arabs. Anyway, it really burned her. Drove her
crazy and she rubbed out a huge amount of tail hair before I realized what
was up and shampooed it off. At the same time I had put a small amount on a
dry bumpy patch my other mare had on her shoulder. The hand sized area
inflamed badly, literally was swollen about 1/2" above the surrounding
areas. I don't know what I was thinking. I know these two mares react badly
to fly spray oils and I just didn't think when I bought this stuff. MTG and
Avon Skin-so-soft are larged mineral oil, as in petroleum. May not bother
your horses at all. Buuuuuttttt, do a small test area first.

Years ago a vet thought my mane rubbing Morgan gelding has an allergy to the
knat bites. Recommended really frequent and liberal doses of fly sprays. I
had just moved to the east coast and for the first time had to deal with all
these %$#@*##$ flies. I had bought Fly B-Gone and oil bases spray. Well the
more I sprayed the more the horse rubbed. His skin actually peeled and I
realized it was the fly spray all along. Shampooed everything off and the
itching stopped. Found I could use water based sprays but I still had to bth
him fairly frequently to remove the build-up of sprays and sweat. So watch
that oil! It could cause problems!

Probably , I thought that too, but mine loose it in

The MTG helps with sweet itch too. Oil (and MTG is
certainly oil based) keeps the midges off and also has
an effect on the worms under the skin (if present).
I, however, hate the smell of the MTG -- like bacon
grease or something. ;)
