Re: [RC] Olympics and Security - Truman Prevatt

Where have you been:-). The marathon is run in 2 hours - not 5 hours. Also while the marathon runners leave the track and go out onto the streets - guess what other events go on. When the winners are scheduled to return to the track there is an opening and they make their final lap or 2. Ninity nine percent of the spectators for the marathon are sitting right there in the track stadium. They see the first mile and the last half mile - none inbetween. The TV audiance gets glimpses of the race from time to time on the streets, but myself when this comes on I got to the frig for a beer. Not that I don't like all track an field, I do. I came within a ant's eyebrow of making the '72 US track team but the marathon is not the event that excites the track audience.

My thoughts on this .....

Can anybody remember how boring marathon running was? Those guys who start at one end, maybe in the stadium, and not to be seen until 5 hours afterwards, when they all come in in drips and drabs? DEFINITELY not a spectator sport ... did somebody mention paint drying? Now it's a whole new ball game - strategically placed cameras along the route; at water points; mounted on a motorcycle filming the front-runners. Viewer ship has sky rocketed as well as participation in the sport.
