Re: [RC] [Guest] Trails & Camping - Jeannie Gillen

I agree....California has a lot of trail, open to horses.....The PCT has an
internet site, complete with current conditions. One word of caution about
the PCT...."WATER".....depending on the time of year, and/or annual
rainfall....make sure you can get water for your horses along the
trail.......that can sometimes be the most difficult part of the ride......

Since you are not in California, I can tell you that National Park Policy is
that "unless otherwise posted, horses can ride all trails"........so you
might want to check out National Parks....again, go online to Department of
the Interior, Long Distance Trails.......

One such LD Trail I rode is from Hermosillo Mexico to San Francisco
California in 1996. The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail....It
has many portions of trail that is horse friendly....although some portions
are not, need work, or may never be. Coyote Canyon in Anza Borrego State
Park....is the most horse friendly part of that historic trail...and offers
a 28 mile canyon, you can ride and camp in.....find a stream, some palm
trees, dig a pit in the sand to cook in......hobble your horse, or tether to
some sage......and sleep on ground with your saddlebags for a pillow....it
is a great experience, and very empowering in this day and age of
"survival"....

Good luck, be safe and have fun..... Jeannie Gillen, Member of the Ca.State
Trails Committee and member of the JBA National Trails Commission

The Pacific Crest Trail runs from Mexico to Canada. In Oregon, this trail
is available to horses and hikers and you can camp the whole length. It
is
also very scenic. Members from Oregon Equestrian Trail (OET) have ridden
this trail, camped out, and would have information regarding any problems
to watch out for. The trail winds through the mountains and in some
places
goes by some horse camps with corrals, such as Quinn Meadows at the base
of
the Three Sisters.

Good luck on your trip.

Dona Hunter
