[RC] Low pulses and "other" breeds - Celeste Murray

I would just like to comment on this thread, I ride a 16.1hh appaloosa mare
build like a tank must weigh around 600kg's. We have been doing endurance
for 4 years now. First 2 years we only did 60km rides, pre-vetted in around
52/54, if we got 50/52 at the vet checks I was happy she had a high resting
pulse, second year it came down, third year lower. Last year we did our
national championships, 3 days 80km, 80km, 52km. 290 entries we finished
52nd, 1st appaloosa in, she never went over 42 at any check starting pulse
38/40 each day all three vet checks each day 40/42, including the first day
which we did in 3hrs 05min!!. Took us longer to reach those low pulses
through conditioning her system and although she didn't run as low as some
of the arabs at 32/34 pre-vet pulse she was never more than 2 beats higher
throughout the ride when some of the arabs pre-vetted at 36 and pulsed in at
42/44 at the checks.

PS. We have to qualify for the nationals by completing 3 80km rides during
the previous 12 months, we did 4 80km rides as well as 2 60km rides and she
top tenned at all of them and at two of them we rode at "state" qualifying
times - to qualify to ride for one of our 9 "states" (provinces) at the
nationals you have to do three rides at an average speed of 18km/hr.
