AW: [RC] heat buildup was 'too slow can cause problems' (Jim) - Hilga Höfkens

I've been amazed at some really hot rides that my horse manages to stay
cool so long as he's moving on (a breeze) but when we stop, say for water
the heat builds up fast. I'm sure that by going fast he's also producing
more heat, but somehow he seems to look and act cooler than 25 milers I
pass who are walking along in the sun.

This is really interesting. At hot rides I see my horses pulse stay at a
certain level at a trot. As soon as we stop for any reason it goes up at
least 10 beats. The hotter it is, the longer it takes her to get down to
"running-pulse" and further down. By taking long I mean something between
30sec. and 2 min. Could that be related to the heat-buildup? I know she has
problems with heat at times (takes time to come down if not cooled
properly).

Also while trotting (later in the race when overexitement has worn off) her
coat is usually dry. She drinks well and will not stop sweating from being
dehydrated. I rather think the breeze drys her sweat and thereby keeps her
cool as long as we don´t stop trotting.
Would heat buildup bother horses in stops as well? Once vetted in riders
usually stop cooling them. Would this cause exitpulses to be higher at
really hot rides?

Hilga
