[RC] 'too slow can cause problems' (Jim) - Rides 2 Far

What are the problems of going too slow and what is considered too
slow?

As an "aside" to that idea...I recently learned that at least with humans
that 3 miles pretty much uses the same amount of calories (energy)
whether you run it in 20 minutes or I walk it in 45...so does that mean
the horses taking 12 hours are using just as many calories as those doing
it in 5?

I've been amazed at some really hot rides that my horse manages to stay
cool so long as he's moving on (a breeze) but when we stop, say for water
the heat builds up fast. I'm sure that by going fast he's also producing
more heat, but somehow he seems to look and act cooler than 25 milers I
pass who are walking along in the sun.
