Re: [RC] pulse - Stagg_Newman

Sue,

I certainly do not mean to penalize other breeds.
I also believe the criteria has to be adjusted for conditions
and that decision should be made by the vets. No one pulse
criteria will work in all conditions.

Clearly we need criteria that are as fair as possible to horses like your.
What I would like to see is some good data in this area.

Have been in sport long enough to remember when people objected to
using 64 rather than 72 at most rides. In retrospect that change was a
good one.

Another possibility to consider would be a lower pulse criteria at the end
of the check.

Do you know what you horse's pulse is typically at the end of a hold
period?
Also what is his resting puse?
Does it take much longer for you horse to reach 64 than for the typical
Arab?

Note that what I am trying to do is get ideas on the table for discussion
at this stage,
not propose specific changes. Once we have ideas on the table we can then
develop the data necessary to find the good ideas and throw out the bad.

Stagg,
I will speak to the highest mountain on this one.
I ride and have only ridden quarter horses for endurance. I have had
the top Quarter Horse award from AQHA four different times. I have over
5,000 + miles ALL on quarter horses and consider my horses very very
fit. (I rode 1,150 miles last year all on the same quarter horse.) If
you give me a pulse of 56 with any kind of heat or humidity, I am in
most cases OUT!
Again, I resent penalizing me for the over ridden Arabians.
Sue P
