Definately try them out.  I really like mine.  But you
are right - they lack padding.  For long distances I
use a seat cover - equivalent to fake sheep wool or
what ever the expensive stuff is.
I've used mine on several horses and never had a
problem with the padding under neath not being enough
- but that doesn't mean that would be the same in all
cases.
I think the quality makes a lot of difference in the
comfort as well.

If you have never ridden in one of these saddles
before, I 
HIGHLY suggest you do so before spending money on
one.  When I 
was a kid, a friend of mine had one, and it was the
most 
uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on: bareback was

preferable, even on her high-withered, high spined
pony.
They have NO padding, for the horse or for the
rider: just
leather over a wooden tree.  The only good thing
about it was 
the center-fire rigging.

I'd try ebay, if you really want one!
