Re: [RC] 2004 old dominion - Truman Prevatt

Hint for this ride. Start out with new shoes and have your farrier make two sets. One complete set you have your crew carry with you so that all the farrier has to do is put on a shoe that is the same as the one pulled. Pulled shoes there is common. In '97 I was crewing we had a complete set of shoes with us. My rider had new fronts put on at 70 miles. The nail heads were gone and the shoes were loose. The shoes were so thin we opted for the new set. He also reset a few nails in the back. He went on the finish 4th, with best vet score and win the OD Trophy. Preperation on this ride is the key.

If you are doing the 100 it is an incredible ride!!! The ride site is wonderful!! Run very nicely. The
most fun I have ever had on a ride. Spectacular views
(bring a camera), crossing the Shannandoah River was
amazing especially at night with the milk jugs lit up.
I went in 97, havent' been able to go since but really
want to again. King and I did 88 miles so we "did
the whole trail" since the last 12 miles is the same
as the first 12 (or was then). King really tore up
his foot pulling a shoe on the mountain and I didn't
feel comfortable having a strange farrier put another
one back on especially since he didn't have the same
kind, and my easy boot was to big to put on barefoot
so...........I pulled us. They made us do a vet check
anyway and since King had no shoe on one front, he
looked off so they said RO lame. Hind sight. Now I
would try the strange farrier and at least finish it
but we were both new at it and I was really having
trouble keeping shoes on him at that time. No regrets.
