RE: [RC] [RC] AERC ride insurance - Nancy Mitts

I think a lot of people were caught off guard on this. I know the ride manager's committee sent out a couple emails about it, this isn't the time of year to get a lot of people's attention. Also, not everybody lives on email like some of us ;-)
Yes, it is my understanding that the insurance will be automatic. Since some rides already have their insurance we might not have to pay AERC extra this year, but would in the future.
Cetainly both companies would not pay out, whether another company would even write the policy, I don't know.
The $10 non member fee should cover the membership issue, if it came to that. This past year AERC had insurance available for rides that needed it.
The way I understand, it was the insurance company who said if they didn't insure all the AERC rides they wouldn't insure any, and yes, the early rides are in jeopardy. If this is the case, and AERC was truly not given enough notice to explore other options, I'm even MORE leary of having to do business with such a company. Surely our organization is big enough to ask for bids on this type of thing, with various options?

So as I understand it....all AERC events will be covered by this insurance,
even if you have your OWN insurance to cover the ride...so they can be
"double insured". And on that, would the insurance companies even allow
rides to be insured by two companies? (I know other forms of insurance seem
to not allow that) So, now even though a ride uses their OWN insurance,
AERC will STILL bill them the fee for using that insurance? (even though
they did not need, or want it, because they have their own???)

Maybe those rides who were having trouble finding insurance should have
checked out the companies that some of the other rides are still using????
(I know, sounds pretty simplistic)

Again, this whole insurance thing is a tad confusing to me, but now I am
seeing it does effect the riders, as they may get charged higher entries to
cover the insurance. And, like Nancy mentioned, having ONE company cover ALL
the rides seems to be asking for rate hikes etc. And last, I know with some
of our carriage driving events, and small club run horses show I used to
attend, they were insured for "members only", so if you were not a club
member, you had to do a 'One Day Membership', which was a fee of $5, then
you were covered by the insurance.(for THAT ride, THAT day) That happen with
any of the endurance rides? Since we have SO many non-AERC members riding
rides, how is that handled?

Rumor mill says some early year rides may be cancelled because of lack of
insurance. One is a particularly LARGE ride in So. California that is held
in just a couple weeks. Why was this issue not figured out sooner? (I know my
insurance company give me enough warning on changes to let me figure
something out)

This is they type of stuff that makes me glad to not be doing management
duties, but also I think the general membership might be needing to
understand what is going on in the national office. No insurance, no
rides....or, maybe higher insurance rates, higher entry fees.
