 Many
 people go to the Tevis to ride, some go to race and we have dead horses
 at the Tevis.  This is the issue that has to be grappled with - the
balance between race and ride which impacts the large majority of our
events.

The premise is also flawed in that death does not limit itself to the
racers.  It occurs across the board, to racers, to mid-packers, to
multi-day horses, etc.  While The Duck is right that a horse can log a lot
more "riding" miles without breaking down than he can "racing" miles, the
idea that we need to be less vigilant of "riding" events is, IMO,
mind-boggling.
