RE: [RC] Selenium again - H. Sandman

Hi,

I understood, that selenium is used as "activator" for glutathione
peroxidase activity. This enzyme should help to remove the free radicals in
cells.
The enzyme is stored in red blood cells, so thats why it is better to
analyse Se in whole blood.
Should it not be better to determine the glutathione peroxidase activity and
calculate it on hemoglobin concentration basis? That's why we add Se after
all?

Oral dosing of selenium in human has a medium fast effect. Within a few days
after suppliing Se the glutathione peroxidase activities rise. So more
enzyme is formed or activated within a short time.

Studies however have proved, that also a big amount of Se is stored in hair
and nails (human). By analysing Se levels in these samples it was suggested
to "predict" the selenium history.
I tried to analyse Se in horse tail- and "fur" hair and "hoof" of a extra
supplied and not-supplied horses, but the horse, that got no extra selenium
had higher levels in both "tissues".
Does anybody know, if Se is stored on the same way in horses as in humans?

Hugo

   |Yup, I stand corrected. My copy of Diagnostic Techniques in
   |Equine Medicine
   |says whole (heparinized) blood, not serum.
   |
   |FWIW, it also says it takes about 5-6 weeks for changes in
   |selenium uptake
   |to be evident via blood tests. I'm assuming that refers mostly to oral
   |supplementation, prolly not so much via IM injections, but
   |don't know for
   |sure.
