[RC] [RC] [Guest] best arabian size/fit for turnout blanket? - Ridecamp Guest

I recommend weathabeeta if you don't have a huge budget(one can be had new
around a hundred or so)Or like me try ebay or a used tack store (I got their
waterproof sheet for 40$ used at a used tack store).TAKA are great , but
pricey. With blankets it is usually what you pay for it.(my Big D fits
Rascal(14.2 1/2 916 lbs, chunk) perfect. But the Weathabeeta fits Honey
better(has pleats and neck is closer fitting than say her first, a
Wilson(which I fixed by using quilting thread on my sewing machine and
sewing darts in the neck:which you could do to make your blanket fit better
in the neck , by taking it up and pinning (or marking with chalk, then
taking to someone who fixes blankets or maybe a drycleaner who does
repairs(they may have a machine that can take the depth of the fabric). I
also "fitted" a blanket I had laying around for my yearling as I didn't want
to buy him a blanket this year.I added darts to neck and even took up a
fold in length to get him thru last year and let it out this year.
An added plus to blanketing, besides easier to keep clean, cuts my grooming
time and cool down(with this 30-40 degree winter variation we get) is they
eat less hay than they do when not blanketed. But you do have the 5 min.
taking it off and on and the cost.

Hey all,

Need to pick up a new turnout blanket for my sweet old boy who could use
some help getting through the Midwest winter. I've got two size 74
blankets.
One an old Simco that is too small by about four inches in the rump and a
Big D that is too large. The body of the Big D fits well but is way to big
across his chest so the blanket slips back and catches him right behind the
withers. Same size blankets but completely different fit? My arab is not
quite 14.2 and is not hard on blankets but this is the first he would have
to wear one for longer than a few days.
I've had horses for over twenty years and he is the first case of lice I've
ever had. In early November our local vet saw him as soon as I noticed some
hair falling out. I thought it was his usual fungal problem as he is prone
to that. The vet had no idea what was wrong and had me treating him for a
zinc and copper deficiency. Needless to say his hair kept falling out and
he
kept getting worse. You wouldn't think you'd need to haul a horse three and
a half hours to find a vet who would know lice when he saw it would you?
Good equine guys are hard to find. Okay so now I'm home wiser about nasty
things like lice (YEWWWWWWWWWW) and poorer with a bald horse who spent last
night in below zero temps with a blanket that doesn't fit. SOMEONE
HELP!!!!!!! Anyone who has suffered an experience like this and has any
helpful advice please feel free to email. And yes I feel like an idiot for
not driving the seven hour round trip sooner. Has anyone else out there had
animals for this long and never seen lice? Just when you think you are a
fairly smart horse owner you find out you don't know anything! My husband
tells me not to beat myself up about it. Anyway I guess the public
"confession" was a good idea. So just in case you think your own horses are
safe from this disgusting stuff don't believe it. My vet thought it was
probably brought in by birds. I never even thought of that. Anyway if you
can help us we're itchy, scratchy, bald and embarrased in Illinois!
