Re: Re: [RC] Changing Vet/Pulse Criteria - roleyed

In answer to why race...Because it was terribly fun and didn't put my horse at
any more risk than anyone elses who may have raced in the 1-10th places and may
not have come down at 15 minutes. I do not see where the extra 5-10 minutes at
the end of the ride "endangered" my horse and he has been well since. Heck, the
only difference between top 10 and 13th would have been a halter or some such
thing so what good does it do to race in the top 10? I'll tell ya why, cuz its
fun for them too and that's why I am here and I believe I take good care of my
horse. Ed

Huh? Ed, why in the world would you "race" for 13th place? You get the
same amount of points, the same "T-Shirt" or whatever for 101st place
that you do for 13th. In position under 10th is a completion, and
nothing else. In addition, why would you place your horse under
metabolic stress and take a chance of injuring him when you KNEW the
conditions were not favorable?

Perhaps I don't understand....or misread your post. If so, I humbly
apologize for my assumption above.

If not, this is EXACTLY why we need this rule. If it were in place, you
would probably NOT have raced for 13th place...and not put your horse in
harms way just for the "fun" of racing.

IMHO, you just made the point that it is "absolutely clear" that this
rule change WOULD make a difference in horse welfare and change rider
behavior.

I'm a heavyweight riding a grade horse which is a "heavy"(turbo charged

horse. Generally, I ride to complete with a goal of going as fast as we can
can go in a quest to do a little better than last time. Sometimes I even do
get close to Top 10(talking 50's) and often am the first HW. We would
generally meet this new criteria for the vet checks but having "raced" at
the end of one 50 in warmer weather than my horse was used to(early April
in Georgia coming from mtns of NC) ended up not meeting pulse criteria
until 20-25 minutes at end of ride. Horse was fine. Never had a metabolic
pull. Few lameness pulls. We would have not gotten a "place"(13th) on this
ride with the proposed criteria. I guess a question I have here is would
this "handicap" non-arab, not so tiney hiney players? I would recommend we
not proceed headlong into changing rules until it is absolutely clear rule
changes will actually make a di!
