Re: [RC] BLM background information. - Karen Sullivan

To aid Jerry in focusing our attention upon BLM planning activities, I've
quickly put together the following list of BLM pointers.

** (BLM links deleted) John, thanks so much, THAT is actually very helpful
and useful information!!

I'm a little concerned about a blanket approach to trails access issues
which we assume that all areas need to be maintained as open for equine
access. This is, I think, both unreasonable and unwarranted. There are
some
areas which are appropriate and others which are not.

**My God! Another voice of reason!! THANK YOU for also stating this! I have
been saying
for YEARS that there are some areas that are just not suitable for
equestrian use or ANY recreational
use, and some areas that should have seasonal (rainy season) closures.
Anyone who disputes this can
email me about Stanford;s Jasper Ridge;which was closed off to recreational
and public use back in
the 70's/80/s (very sensitive serpentine ridge), where critical studies have
been done on population biology
with the Checkerspot butterfly under Dr. Paul Ehrlich........

It would seem (IMO)
that our overall credibility would be enhanced, both in the view of the
BLM
planners and in the eyes of other organizations, such as the wilderness
society, if we were to approach the problem with a more open approach.

Absolutely. And much more can be accomplished by a combination of science
AND common sense, than
pure emotion (people all up in arms about losing "rights". without having
any idea of the FACTS)

And....turning this back to the BLM mustang issue....since Randy DID post to
ridecamp about this proposed
idea of BLM adoptions at endurance rides, there has still been no post from
him back to ridecamp, explaining how the process would work or adressing any
of the questions brought up.....where is the accountabiliy on THAT idea?
Karen
