Re: [RC] RAT and older people..really endurance people - Barbara McCrary

The neat thing about R&T is that everyone who finishes is a winner in his
own way. I know that's AERC's motto, but it is also very applicable to R&T.
It demands a couple of people who can travel, one way or the other, whether
running or jogging or just walking. And it demands a good horse...an
outstanding one for top runners who want to place first, an adequately
conditioned one for two people who aren't great runners. A well-conditioned
horse can take a couple of lower-level runners through; he can actually help
lesser runners, like my husband and myself. We were poor runners, but
excellent riders. Being on the horse was actually relaxing and restful.
All in all, R&T is a REAL team sport. I know several marriages that have
resulted in R&T connections, one of which is our daughter Ellen's. She and
Dennis Rinde teamed up for several Swanton Pacific 100 R&Ts. Maybe they
figured if they could survive the dynamics of doing a 100-mile R&T together,
they could make it in marriage. Now if someone wants a REAL challenge, try
SP100 R&T!!

For more on RAT and endurance - you might take a look at the
VP column in EN this month.
