[RC] Rider Weight: How much is too much in the beginning? - Patti Pankiewicz-Fuchs

I am 7 weeks post-partum and finally ready to start (really) working with the coming 6 year old Arab mare I bought last October to be my future (hopefully) 50 miler horse. She was born and rasied in the same 50 acre pasture for her whole life (until last Oct., of course) and had limited human contact. My husband has been on her twice, I kept a leadrope on her while he "directed" her, she did great.

Anyway, my concern is that I am currently about 240 lbs. (I'm 5'9")....she's about 14.3, of decent bone, but by no means stocky. I'm thinking I shouldn't even get on her until I get closer to 200. Or is that (for an untrained/unbalanced horse) still too much? I want her to be a 10 year horse someday, so I want to do right by her from the beginning.

Thanks,
Patti & Serendipity
