[RC] Riding or Racing - Katey

Heidi and Gary,
I think we could be in total agreement *if* everyone rode as you both
describe in your posts. And Heidi, Paul's "race" (or whatever) at Old Selam
was ridden very well- no doubt. Problem is, for every great (fast) rider
there is a competitive wannabe that pushes their horse to the limit on a
regular basis. You don't have to be around long to tell the difference. I
would also throw out that not every horse that is overridden is in the top
ten. I know several riders that believe they will turn into pumpkins if
they come in last(which, by the way, we know isn't true <g>) so they push
their horses beyond their condition/capabilities on that given day. I
wouldn't begrudge anyone of "taking their day" when it comes to them, heck,
I even won BC once....yes, anything is possible.

As far as heroes go, mine are the riders that ride because they love to ride
and they love their horses no matter what speed they ride.

Having said that, I would still like to see the speed rewards go away. I
doubt it would make a difference in most people's mentality, as it's not the
first place prize they are after as much as bragging rights. Heck, my
little mare is pretty fast, maybe I'll kick her in gear and win a ride next
year just to keep everyone guessing. <g> (yea right).
