One possible criteria is the one used by UMECRA,  no medication etc. before
the horse leaves the ride site.  I have argued against this rule at UMECRA
conventions because it raises the spector of sick horses being thrown into
trailers so that they would not have their completions removed.  To defend
the rule, I have not seen this happen at UMECRA rides.

If there is a feeling that a significant number of horses develop metabolic
problems a few hours after completion, there could be another metabolic exam
scheduled at a particular time post ride.  I would not be opposed to it
being the next morning.  This might also force some people to stay in camp
longer, thus allowing more recovery before trailering.

PS. I am aware that some (a minority) horses live so close to particular
ride that it is better to take them home immediately...
