That is absolutely not true.  Distemper (panleukopenia) in cats is a GI 
disease, not respiratory or ocular like in dogs.  If their eyes are glued shut, 
then they could have a number of upper respiratory problems that kittens can 
get. 
They can have bacterial issues (strep, staph, chlamydia) or viral (calici, 
herpes).

DO NOT vaccinate the kittens while they are ill...that will only make matters 
worse.  Hopefully you have already found help with them.
