[RC] Risk Factors for Colic - EventXC

Since life is risky and I think we all agree that horses can colic anywhere,
I thought I would pass on the results of a study (a follow up to previous
study actually) that was presented at the Western States Vet Conf in 99 or 00.
They looked at over1000 horses and just evaluated risk factors for colics.

Breed dispositions didn't really matter because it depended on the
preponderance of the breed in that area (I think one study was in VA and the
other a
little further west). However, what I thought interesting was looking at
horses'
jobs. Guess what job had the lowest risk of colic?..... Schooling horses.
The researchers thought it had to do with the fact that the horses were out
moving all the time.

Other risks were diet (too much concentrates), travel, age and vaccinations.
BTW, on that note, general vaccinations increased the risk of colic about 2
times. Potomac Horse Fever increased the risk almost 7 times.
