[RC] Decline of entries in 100 milers - Susan Young Casey

Just my 2 cents worth concerning the decline of
entries in 100 mile rides...

Time and Money!

While we have the same 24 hour period now as we did 20
years ago, our lives have changed during those 20
years. Look who did the 100s back "then"...young to
middle-aged women and young men. Those people have
grown up and now have demanding jobs or more
responsibilities. Those people now have grandchildren
demanding their time. Those people are now older and
simply can't ride 100 mile at a time anymore.

I think our attitude and priorities have changed too.
There was a time when more people wanted to ride
longer distances; now, our attitude is "that's too
hard". I'm not pointing fingers here...I'm as guilty
as the rest. There was a 6 year period where I'd
rather foxhunt than do an endurance ride because the
foxhunting was a shorter period of time. (No, it
doesn't matter that I could get killed at any given
second!)

A 100 miler and multiday ride still holds the romantic
images for me so I'll be doing a few this ride season.
I don't know if there's anything someone ELSE can do
unless we promote the 100s and multidays in such a was
as to motivate riders to participate. If riders are
too lazy, not interested, too busy, etc...they won't
do the classic rides.

Frank hit the nail on the head. Well said, sir!
